Mindset is such an important aspect of success.
How we think about situations, people, our interests, other people's motivators impacts how we deal with situations and people.
What we believe about people, situations, our interests and the interests of others impacts the results we see.
Making the SHIFT in perspective is not always easy, but, it can bring about a completely different result!
Many years ago when I was a corporate mediator, I had the opportunity to see how a change in mindset brought about a change in outcomes (for the better or worse, depending on the mindset).
Take Jo and Sally. Two colleagues who worked together for many years or "toooooo long" as Sally often whispered under her breath (just loud enough for colleagues to hear). Sally was the more seasoned employee of the two and had worked at the company for many years, in many different roles. Jo was in her fifth year of this career, and only her second year with this company. She was excited about her career and the impact she could make in the world. To Jo's excitement, Sally often responded with comments like "been there done that!" or "give it another year, you'll see the light of day" or "must be nice to have rose colored glasses on all the time" and... "if you have been around as long as me you'll learn to put in your time ad keep quiet." Jo found her energy drained in the presence of Sally. Instead of seeing Sally as a downer, negative or passion squasher, she chose to see Sally as a skilled professional she could learn from. When Jo announced this in the meeting, Sally's body language changed as did her tone and language. She began to act like the role model Jo chose to see her as. Sally in her own mind had decided people see her as negative, and difficult, so she acted this way. When someone changed the perspective and looked at her through a different lense, it was harder for her to be negative.
Does this work every time?
No.
Will changing how you see people result in them changing how they act?
No.
Then why make the shift?
There are many reasons.... your energy remains more positive, you may bring about a change in time, it is easier to work with people you believe are good in their intentions... then negative and out to get you. Coming from a place of respect and hope is a much easier approach to life then coming from a place of despair, distrust and dislike. What you think about others is often a reflection of yourself.
How can you change your mindset to bring about a better outcome?
1) Frame your day- everyday I choose the type of day I intend to have, how I will interact with others, the difference I will make, and, my attitude.
2) Check in with yourself- when you get annoyed or emotional about something outside your control or influence, ask yourself where the emotion is coming from?
3) Decide in advance how you choose to communicate with others- if you are doing into a meeting choose either a "difficult conversation" or a "respectful resolution based conversation". Your choice impacts your words, how you show up and the results you achieve.
4) Remember- proving others wrong doesn't make you right.
5) Communicate with courage, clarity and compassion. I call this clean, drama free dialogue.

Finding your voice
I am delighted to have my friend Joel provide a guest blog post today.... enjoy!
Finding
Your Voice: Guest blog by Joel Boggess
During the past seven years, some people
come to me because they are in a life transition: a child leaving the nest, a
layoff, a divorce, a marriage. Some are dissatisfied in their work. Others know
they want something different for their lives but are unclear on what that means
or how to go about discovering what that “something” is. Whatever their initial
reason for seeking out a coach, I’ve learned that most people’s needs run
deeper than simply navigating the life changes they’re facing. What most people
really want is clarity about their purpose. They want hope that “this” isn’t
all there is to life. And they want the confidence to be the most authentic
version of themselves.
In every case, finding their true voice
empowers them to take their life in the direction that best suits them and
their personality.
What
does it mean to “find your voice”?
Voice comes from the Latin root vo, which
is also the root word for vocation. One of the many ways you can express your
voice is through your work. But Finding Your Voice is about so much more than a
career choice. It’s about having clarity of life direction. It’s about giving
full expression to your true self - holding nothing back.
It seems impossible that we could ever lose
touch with our soul’s voice. I mean, it’s part of who we are, right? Well, if
you followed the traditional track - elementary school, high school, college,
day job -you’ve spent the majority of your life working to please others. Think
about how many times an authority figure in your life - a boss, a teacher or
professor, a minister, a parent, or someone else you looked to for guidance -
has pointed out areas of weakness (or difference) rather than celebrating your
strengths. The overriding message is that in order to be successful you need to
be well-rounded. The problem is, well-rounded is synonymous with average. When
you spend all your time trying to fit in, you forget who you really are - or,
worse, you feel wrong for being yourself.
How
do you find your voice?
- Valuing your enduring qualities and unique traits - your gifts, experiences, knowledge, compassion, and skills. When you see your innate value - and yes, you are valuable - a light begins to shine within you.
- Owning who you are and understanding what is important to you - your values and passions.
- Living intentionally and authentically - it allows you to filter out others’ messages, rules, and beliefs when they don’t apply to you. It also frees you to focus your time, resources, and talent on the people and projects you care about the most.
- Creating a life plan by visualizing your best life. Those who make time to create a vision and plan for their lives often receive more wealth, greater pleasure, and better relationships than they have ever imagined.
- Embracing and harnessing your emotions. Consider how you would feel if you did more of what brings you joy. You would feel more joyful!
Intimately knowing your voice allows you to
stand your ground. This strength of character enhances every area of your life
- from your relationships, to your career choices, to the way you choose to
enjoy your free time. It allows you to recover the energy, excitement, and mojo
you lost somewhere in the hustle and bustle and ups and downs of your
occasionally (or perpetually) chaotic life.
You may feel as if you’ve lost your voice -
that you are not the person you used to be, or the person you want to be. Find
Your Voice, find your way back.

Life is like a box of chocolates... or a cup of coffee...
My mom has a knack for finding the most inspirational short videos and stories and sending them to me at the exact moment I need them (sometimes I don't know ...but she always does).
Our dogs Toby and Toby Jr (TJ) have taught me a lot about myself, life, business, and living a life that is full... of all the right things.... and putting your best foot forward.
Our mission at Team Toby is to improve lives by teaching kindness, acceptance and respect. Whether it be in the boardroom, classroom, school yard or conference centre, my message as a professional speaker always stems from this foundation.... kindness, acceptance and respect.
Animals are so accepting...so unconditional...so non-judgmental. In the workplace when people can show up and be present in this way (accepting and non judgmental) the workplace culture shifts, in the right direction. Relationships and trust improve. Forgiveness happens. And the team can reach a new level of synergy.
My dogs have also taught me about simplicity. One of my keynote presentations starts with "life is full of moments. Moments that define you. Moments that challenge you. Moments that stretch you. Moments that help you grow." and ends with "How will spend your moments?"

This beautiful short video sums up the importance of making your moments matter, enjoying life as you are experiencing it, and, the power of kindness.
A special shout out to my mom for somehow always just knowing the right thing to send at the right time. Enjoy.

As you move forward in your week, remember to ask yourself these questions:
1) How am I showing up in this moment?
2) Who am I being in this moment?
3) How will I spend my moments?

Turning Confrontation to Collaboration...Getting the dialogue back on track
I had the opportunity to interview
Sharon Wilson on a recent EDA webinar for which I am the featured presenter and host.
EDA - Economic Developers Alberta is collaborating with me to offer a Lunchinar (webinars at lunch) series.
My colleague and friend Sharon Wilson, a Chartered Mediator and dispute resolution expert joined me on a recent webinar in the series, we were talking about turning a confrontation to a conversation. All too often conversations go off the tracks and end up in a combative or confrontational dialogue.
Sharon talked about some of the barriers to collaboration and productive conversations, including:
- Self perception
- Hidden Expectations
- Covert communication
- Not paying attention to how we word our comments
- Speaking in a way that people can hear you
- Understanding non verbal communication
- Exploring the underlying needs in an issue.
People create more conflict when
they push back in the conversation. Sharon suggested that one common problem is the tendency for people often jump in too early to solve the disagreement,
and it derails the dialogue. What’s very important in avoiding this is to go below the surface
discussion and really explore what is going on.
Personality
differences often get in the way, and of course emotions get in the way… so
deal with these first.
Ask yourself this question.... "Is how I am going to
respond is going to move the conversation towards resolution or away from
resolution?" This is a good guiding question in choosing your words carefully so that you actually advance the dialogue and keep it on track.
Sharon also pointed out that you can Use the WIN method:
When…
I think/feel/see
And next time….
The point of moving conflict to collaboration and respectful conversation is to build a bridge, and you can achieve this through active listening, the WIN method, and, asking questions.
The next EDA webinar is on the topic of Engaging employees in the workplace, on October 30. You can find out more information and register here:
Even if you can't join us live, it is a good idea to register so that you can still get the recording of the webinar and listen to it at your leisure. You can register at: http://www.edaalberta.ca/Default.aspx?pageId=68115&eventId=764041&EventViewMode=EventDetails

Bootstrapping your way to paradise
Today's blog is from my friend Tina Dietz
Best selling
"lifehacker" moguls like Tim Ferriss and Karol Kadja have made their
fortune telling people how to build supposedly easy ways to make money using
the Internet so that you can go and travel the world without having to work
more than a couple of hours a week. These guys have great ideas and are a
wealth of online resources, but let’s face it, not everyone is super tech
savvy. Not to mention, both of these guys (and many other well known
"experts") are single, 20 something males who dropped out of some Ivy
League college. There’s nothing wrong with that, but what about the rest of us?
What if you have a family, or you do not have the connections that the upper
crust can provide?
Money is a factor in this equation, but it is not as important as you might think. What is far more crucial is for you to define the kind of lifestyle you want to live and what is important to you. Consider what your big picture is regardless of your current circumstances. Look at what inspires you and what legacy you want to leave. As an entrepreneur, you are still far more likely to be happier than most workers even though you might be working longer hours and making less money initially.
As a “bootstrapper,” that is, someone who is using their own money and resources to gradually build a business rather than get investors or take out a big loan, you are probably in for the long haul and already have some kind of vision that inspires you. Why not go the extra mile and build in more freedom to your dreams? If you are the one at the helm, piloting your own ship…you might as well create your business in such a way that it is an oasis for you. An oasis nourishes and refreshes you as well as those who interact with you.
If you are willing to put in the effort, build a plan, and go on the journey, you will always find a way. Connect with others who have done it. You are not alone. The world has become so flat that with a few keystrokes you can find entire communities who are creating (or who have already created) the kind of life you are looking to live and you will be happier to boot.
Start to question your status quo. We fall into habits and patterns that we simply accept as truth over time. Unlock your inner rebel and consider if you have allowed your creative thinking to get crushed under limiting beliefs like "I can't disrupt my kids’ lives," or "I have to keep my job because of the insurance," or "It is too expensive." When you catch those thoughts and beliefs coming up, start to ask yourself if it is really true then brainstorm some alternatives and try on some new possibilities just like you would slip on a new pair of shoes.
Most overnight successes are years in the making. You get to write your own “choose your own adventure” story. What would your “oasis” look like? My journey has led me to creating a mobile lifestyle for my family, exploring the world. Currently we are living in Costa Rica at a whole different pace. If you want to know more about how we bootstrapped our way to paradise, and the fundamental strategies you must know to create your personal and business oasis, Tina is sharing the 5 Keys to Unlock Your Oasis Based Business on my next complementary teleclass.
